Instead of interpreting life’s darkness through a pessimistic lens, we should view the presence of darkness as purpose-driven.

According to the New Oxford American Dictionary, Dawn is defined as the first appearance of light in the sky before sunrise. Simply put, Dawn is the emergence of light during a period of darkness. Throughout the duration of life, we experience many phases of darkness, both literally and figuratively. From a literal perspective, the earth’s movement around the sun brings periods of darkness to many parts of the planet on a daily basis. Figuratively speaking, the journey through life takes an individual through many phases, some of which may be perceived as moments of darkness.

In my 35 years of living, there are many experiences that I would regard as moments of darkness. It is during those moments that I believe the greatest opportunity exists to learn about yourself. During a moment of darkness, one impatiently awaits the emergence of light, a mere glimmer of hope that the darkness is not permanent. Just as the sun eventually shines on parts of the planet devoid of light, the darkness-filled moments in life eventually become a distant memory. Even in the darkest moments of life, Dawn brings the appearance of light, which is often just enough to give one hope.

Dawn wields significant power, serving to help us realize that bright moments lie ahead, despite the presence of hopelessness and despair. Understanding this simple analogy should inspire an adjustment of our individual and collective focus. Instead of interpreting life’s darkness through a pessimistic lens, we should view the presence of darkness as purpose-driven. Dark moments require you to rely on direction and guidance from a source greater than yourself, leading to the realization that you are not always in control. Furthermore, without moments of darkness, would we ever really appreciate Dawn and the eventual dominance of light?

Just as the Earth’s progression from darkness to light is cyclical, you can rest assured that dark moments will again arise. As they appear, appreciate the opportunity to learn and grow. And when Dawn emerges in your life, be forever grateful for the glimmer of light.
